Welcome to The Dorothy Springer Trust

The Dorothy Springer Trust (DST) provides scholarships to disabled people in Sierra Leone to undergo advanced Information Communication and Technology (ICT) training and certification.

Registered with the UK Charity Commission in 2007, DST Is a young charity – but we have a model that works. Many of our students are all now in skilled employment – they are confident that they can get a job and rely on their knowledge, ability and skills, rather than on the donations of others. They also act as role models for other disabled people!

2014 marked the beginning of a new stage for the Trust, with the opening of offices in Sierra Leone. This provided an accessible location for training and other services offered by DST. Seven students have also been awarded bursary certificates or training.

In 2019 the Trust moved to new premises in the Freetown Cheshire Home on the East side of Freetown. This gives us a larger office space to operate from and expand into, as well as new links and relationships.

Our operation is enabling disabled people to find regular employment and advance their integration and equality in Sierra Leonean society — today and, increasingly so, in the future.

Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean. It’s known for the white-sand beaches lining the Freetown Peninsula. The capital city, Freetown, commemorates the nation’s slave-trade history with the Cotton Tree landmark and King’s Yard Gate. Both were known as places of refuge for returned slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nearby Bunce Island was a key departure point during the slave trade.
